Making the Most of the Season
There are plenty of reasons for a winter wedding – less congested venue calendars, better guest availability, and savings. So how do you make the most of colder temperatures and unpredictable weather on the day?
Here are six tips to create a winter wedding you’ll love.
Timing – Because it gets darker much earlier in winter, your ceremony needs to be earlier to catch the light for photos, but also to avoid freezing temperatures as the daylight fades. Winter weddings also tend to wind down a little earlier, with the dancing tending to get started earlier. Work with your wedding planner or venue to adjust the run sheet to take account of all these things.
Photography – With limited time for outdoor photography, and the possibility of bad weather on the day, consider capturing the magic with a first-look photo shoot. That’s where the couple see each other in their wedding dress/suit before the ceremony with an outdoor or indoor studio shoot.
Clothing – Colder temperatures mean a sensible selection of dresses and suits for the wedding party. Fur shawls and winter coats are part of the look, and make the outside portion of the wedding far more enjoyable. Also think about footwear, given that the underfoot conditions could be worse than in summer.
Colour – Think carefully about the sort of colours that work best at a time when the light is weaker and gardens look a little drab with leaves off the trees and fewer flowers. Strong colours in the bouquets, buttonholes and at the venue can really give the day a lift.
Food – Heartier meals are better menu choices at this time of year, with winter vegetables rather than salads, and hot dishes preferred to cold.
The right venue – Most importantly, make sure your venue is equipped to make a great winter wedding. That doesn’t just mean in terms of the buildings, heating, food and so on, but also in terms of whether they offer a suitable winter package, which should be cheaper than their summer offerings.
