Be True To Yourself

Fab Wedding Advice – Part 6 of a 10-part series

Toasting with champagne, incorporating handfasting in your ceremony, having six speeches – if none of those things are you, don’t feel you have to go ahead with them. Often couples find themselves organising their wedding based on the wishes of others, so don’t get caught in that trap.

Knowing exactly what you want goes right back to Part 1 of this series about setting your priorities early. That will help prevent you from being overly influenced by others, against your better judgement, and knowing in your heart of hearts what really means the most to you.

That said, if you’ve found yourself seduced by the ideas of others or drifting down the wrong path, be careful about changing things that will make the wedding difficult, such as an impractical runsheet or cancelling vendors at the last minute. Staying true to yourself isn’t a blank cheque for making big changes on a whim.

That’s especially true when dealing with suppliers, from your venue to the cake company. If arrangements have already been made with people who make their living from providing services to wedding couples it could well end in tears all round if there’s a fight over cancelling a contract – the last thing you want before your big day.

What all this adds up to is that you should have the wedding you want, and make the decisions of what that means as early as possible. Once you’ve worked that out, stay with your decisions and resist the temptation to make late changes.
